FIRST QUARTER 2024
Collaboration agreements on advanced innovation in the European market
The Fundación ODS ACCIÓ has begun to work with entities, universities, and technology centers to reach collaboration agreements in the presentation of proposals on advanced innovation in the European market.
On this occasion the foundation will offer its support to promote a pioneering advanced research project on solutions and improvement methodologies in a circular economy environment for the aluminum battery industry, contributing to transcend Europe’s dependence on critical raw materials.
The role of the Foundation in this project will be mainly to disseminate the development, progress and results of the project and to support the techno-economic, environmental, social and safety assessment and evaluation of the project.
This project aims to move away from dependence on lithium-ion batteries, paving the way for safer, more sustainable, and cost-effective energy storage in favor of the sustainable, green and low-cost production of emerging energy storage technologies, a vitally important objective to enable the energy transition in stationary applications in order to minimise environmental impact.
The use of recycled aluminum can bring significant CO2 saving benefits, making this type of battery technology a viable alternative for battery production in the EU.
This pioneering project on aluminum batteries in circular economy strategically contributes to multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) is driven through the development of “emerging energy storage technologies” that generate new sustainable employment opportunities and “contribute to transcending Europe’s dependence on critical raw materials,” thus strengthening European economic autonomy [1]. SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) is strengthened through research in “solutions and improvement methodologies in a circular economy environment” that promotes sustainable technological innovation and the development of resilient infrastructures [2]. Finally, SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) is materialized through “collaboration agreements with entities, universities and technological centers” that demonstrate how strategic alliances are fundamental to drive the energy transition and achieve sustainability objectives [3].
