FOURTH QUARTER 2025

Participants of the innovative Hybritec project consortium, including Fundación ODS Acció, receive the prestigious STEP Seal granted by the European Commission

The European Commission has granted the prestigious STEP Seal (Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform) to the HYBRITEC project; a technological initiative that has been awarded for its outstanding innovation focused on developing hybrid fuel cell systems for renewable energy communities.

The STEP Seal is a high-quality label granted by the European Commission that facilitates access to funding opportunities under other Union programmes covered by the STEP platform. This recognition is awarded exclusively to cutting-edge project proposals that have been acknowledged in a highly competitive evaluation process by an international panel of independent experts.

The HYBRITEC project, in which Fundación ODS ACCIÓ participates as a partner, addresses the need for flexible, efficient, and resilient zero-carbon energy solutions within Renewable Energy Communities (RECs). The proposal focuses on demonstrating hybrid Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) technology combined with Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) systems for peak loads and grid services.

This distinguished technological proposal systematically integrates a high-efficiency SOFC fuel cell of approximately 50 kWe with a fast-responding 60 kWe PEMFC fuel cell for peak loads and grid services, powered entirely by traceable green hydrogen. The system incorporates an advanced digital twin platform that provides a detailed virtual environment for accurate simulation, operational analysis, and virtual testing of control strategies.

Obtaining the STEP Seal represents a significant milestone for Fundación ODS ACCIÓ, as it validates the quality and strategic relevance of the HYBRITEC project within the context of European strategic technologies. This recognition reinforces the foundation’s commitment to advanced technological innovation and its contribution to the European energy transition towards a more sustainable future.

The HYBRITEC project contributes to the objectives of the 2030 Agenda and the European Green Deal, strengthening European competitiveness in the transition towards the development of more resilient energy communities, and specifically to SDG 7, a challenge that seeks to reduce global impact by ensuring universal access to clean energy through progressive technology in pursuit of a carbon-free European climate neutrality.
